Ground-Mounted Solar Array Relocation Project, North Hertfordshire

This project involved the relocation and reinstallation of an existing solar PV system at a farm in North Hertfordshire.

Project Overview

This project involved the relocation and reinstallation of an existing solar PV system at a farm in North Hertfordshire. The original solar array had been installed in a suboptimal location and the mounting system had not been installed to an acceptable standard, limiting the system’s long-term performance and reliability.

Our objective was to reposition the existing solar panels into a more suitable location on the property and install them on a new purpose-built ground mounting structure, allowing the farm to maximise solar generation while ensuring a robust and durable installation for years to come.

Site Assessment and Design

Following a detailed assessment of the site, a new location was selected that offered significantly improved solar exposure throughout the day. By relocating the array to an area with fewer shading concerns and better overall orientation, the system is now positioned to achieve higher energy yields and improved long-term performance.

A bespoke ground-mounted framework was designed to accommodate the existing solar panels while providing a strong and stable structure capable of withstanding local weather conditions.

Ground Screw Foundation System

One of the key considerations for this project was the site’s location within a conservation area. To minimise environmental impact, traditional concrete foundations were avoided in favour of a ground screw foundation system.

Ground screws provide several advantages:

Minimal ground disturbance during installation.
No requirement for concrete, reducing environmental impact.
Faster installation compared to traditional foundations.
Fully removable at the end of the system’s operational life.
The land can be returned to its original condition with minimal remediation.

This approach aligned with both the environmental objectives of the project and the requirements of the conservation area.

Installation Works

The existing solar panels were carefully removed from their previous location and prepared for reinstallation. Our team then installed the new ground screw foundations and assembled the ground mounting structure before securely mounting the solar array in its new position.

The completed installation provides a clean, professional appearance while ensuring the panels are positioned for optimal performance.

Project Outcome

By relocating the solar array and installing a new ground-mounted support structure, the farm now benefits from a significantly improved solar PV installation. The new location maximises available sunlight, while the ground screw foundation system provides a sustainable and reversible solution that respects the surrounding environment.

This project demonstrates how existing solar assets can often be repurposed and upgraded rather than replaced, delivering improved performance and longevity while minimising environmental impact.
