There is a common belief that if a system with unprotected cabling is installed in compliance with MCS standards and regularly maintained it is perfectly safe. This is not true.

Some modern string inverters have built in arc fault detection which can greatly reduce the dangers associated with DC arcs but older inverters at the cheaper end of the market do not.
